Inn Focus, Tenby & Gwynfa travelled to Warwick to represent the WPF at the PAGB National Print Championships on Saturday 15th July and it was a good day for the Welsh clubs.
The first two rounds of the competition consist of 16 PDI’s for each of the 38 competing clubs with images scored out of a maximum of 15. The total scores for each club over two rounds determines the eight clubs who compete in the Grand Final and the 30 clubs who contest the Plate Final.
At the end of round two Inn Focus had a total of 208, enough to qualify for the Grand Final with Tenby (189) and Gwynfa (187) going into the Plate Final.
In the Plate Final clubs need to select 8 images (with only four allowed from the previous rounds). After a high scoring final Tenby finished a creditable joint 12th on 102 points and Gwynfa achieved an excellent 3rd place on 108 points (from a possible 120) with only Tamworth (111) and Dumfries (112) ahead. Well done team Gwynfa. A great result for their travelling army.
In the Grand Final each club submits 20 images, 10 of which must not have been used in the previous rounds. After an excellent selection of images were projected to the large crowd present the winners turned out to be Smethwick PS with an incredible 282 points (from a maximum 300). In a competition where the highest score an individual image can achieve is 15, they averaged 14.1 per image. Wigan 10 were runners up on 277 and Arden PG third on 271. Inn Focus were a creditable 5th on 267 and will be automatically invited to the 2018 event.
There was futher Welsh success when it was announced that Phil Morgan of Inn Focus was awarded Judge’s Choice for his photograph European Dipper. Well done Phil. (The judges were Roger Hance FRPS AFIAP BPE5*, Gabriel O’Shaughnessy FIPF FRPS MFIAP and Richard Speir DPAGB APAGB BPE2*).

Sad news from Bridget Craddock at the Vale:
Vale PC sad news that longstanding member and previous long term competition secretary Mostyn Gardner passed away on the 5th August after a long illness. He is well known to many outside of our club and I thought they would want to know.
Mostyn Gardner’s funeral will take place on Wednesday 23rd August at 11 am at the Adams Funeral Home, Barry.  It is situated next to the Memorial Hall at the bottom of the hill as you go towards Morrisons.
Sad news from Peter Harman at Merthyr Tydfil.
Mr Arthur Lewis, a life member of Merthyr Tydfil Camera Club passed away this morning. Some older members of the WPF may remember him, he attended many competitions and battles not as an entrant but as an observer of good photography.
Arthur Lewis’s funeral is on Friday 18th August at 1115am in Llwydcoed Crematorium then back to West End Bowls Club on the Grove Merthyr Tydfil.
It is with great sadness that Western Valley Camera Club announces the passing of one of their well-respected and much loved members Derek Terry.
Derek was an accomplished photographer achieving his AWPF and CPAGB accreditations along with many international successes. Â He was a member of the WVCC executive committee for a number of years as our Exhibition Officer and he was invaluable in securing us four exhibitions every year throughout the area allowing us to promote not only the camera club but also the work of all its members.
Although we will undoubtedly miss him for all the practical things he did for our club, it is the loss of him as a great friend and supporter that we will miss the most
Derek’s funeral is to be held at Moriah Church, Risca on Wednesday the 19th of July at 12.15 followed by a short service at Croesyceiliog Crematorium Cwmbran.
I am sure that you would all join with us in offering our sincere condolences to his wife, children and all of Derek’s family and friends at this sad time.
The 2017 Barrian Cup was won by Inn Focus.
In joint 3rd place were Afan Nedd Camera Club and Barry Camera Club with 80 points, in second place was Thornbury Camera Club with 84 points, and in 1st place was Inn Focus Group with 90 points.
The judge for the day was Leigh Preston FRPS MPAGB APAGB EFIAP.
The scoresheet can be downloaded here.
We have received some awful news from Jamie Archdale-Smith at Barry Camera Club.
It is with great regret that we have to announce the sad and sudden death of our Chairman Mike Lewis on Saturday 17th June 2017. Mike passed away unexpectedly whilst out doing what he loved best, on a walk in the countryside taking photographs.
Mike was a passionate fan of all things photographic, and will be greatly missed by all. His passing will be a great loss for Barry Camera Club and the Welsh Photographic Federation, both of whom he served diligently for a great many years.
Our thoughts go to his family at this difficult time.
Mike’ funeral will be held at Barry Crematorium on Friday 7th July at 11.00 am and afterwards at the Seashore Grill, Beach Road, Swanbridge, CF64 5UG.
This report from Gareth Martin:-
Cymru Monochrome’s biggest, and possibly the largest and the only monochrome print battle of its kind held in the UK ever, was held on Saturday 13th May at St. Paul’s Centre, Port Talbot. More than 100 people turned up at “Only Mono†with 41 clubs from all over the UK taking part and with 164 prints of the highest standard to be judged we knew we were in for a treat.
