Ace of Prints Entry Deadline

Hi Folks,

It has been decided to move the Ace of Prints Competition from Briton Ferry to Talbot Green Community Centre. As this venue has a market there on Saturdays it is also necessary to change the date to Sunday 7th July 2019 with the closing date remaining at 16th June 2019.

I would be grateful if those Clubs considering entering could contact me to let me know their intentions by April – Thanks!

Because there are a few new Clubs and there have been changes of Secretaries in 2019 I have decided to circulate the Rules etc., again.

Rules     Round One Form (Word version)    Round One Form (PDF version)

I do believe that any of our Clubs who have 5 print workers can compete successfully in this competition – and it will expose their members work to a wider audience, the entry must consist of Colour and Monochrome prints with no more than 3 Nature prints. So although the rules say a Club is allowed “Unlimited” numbers of prints this is just to remove any artificial limits. A Club needs 12 prints in round one and if you go through to the second or Plate round you would only need 3 more prints – making a total of 15 prints. Obviously any prints that scored lowly in the first round a Club may want to replace – say 5 more prints making 20 prints a comfortable quantity to compete with.

Now obviously a Club could come along with 40+ prints as it may decide to see what the Judges’ peccadillos or dislikes are in the First Round so that they can choose effectively for the final. I have to say I think that would be overkill as print quality is what counts.

So to summarise:– 5 print workers with 4 prints each would enable a Club to partake and enjoy the Competition. For a small £10 entry fee you could enjoy a feast of Welsh Photography and measure yourself against your Federation Clubs. I’ve even attached the First Round Entry Form so that you can start listing the great work you see in your Club right now!

Remember the Olympics motto: Taking part is what it’s all about – not just winning!

Looking forward to hearing from you before or during April – any queries contact me as below!

Request from the WPF Judges Secretary

For anyone thinking about becoming a WPF judge and would like to know more about judging, could you please contact me (judgepresent@thewpf.co.uk),  so that I can arrange an informal meeting.  This usually takes the form of a ‘mock’ judging session where you are given a set of prints to critique, and Jan and I go through them with you and guide you through the main points.  It is very informal, consisting of four or five applicants, and takes place at Rose Cottage.

Ed Cloutman (WPF Judges and Presenters Secretary)

Amended Result from the WFP Memorial Trophy

The 2018 WPF Memorial Trophy for Colour Prints.

1st – Inn Focus Group
2nd – Gwynfa

Scores here.

Judges: Rod Wheelans MPAGB MFIAP FIPF HonPAGB HonSPF and Anne Greiner MPAGB.

Revised result – Tenby and District Camera Club have informed the Executive that one of the images they entered in the Memorial Trophy had been accepted in last year’s Welsh Salon and was therefore not eligible for the Memorial Trophy. Tenby won the competition and notified us of this error a few days later stating they wished to withdraw the image from the Competition. Consequently, Inn Focus, originally second, are now the winners of the WPF Memorial Trophy 2018 and all other clubs move up one place.

The WPF Executive thank Tenby and District Camera Club for bringing this genuine error to our attention. The Executive will revise the rules for future competitions to try to ensure that this mistake doesn’t occur again.

Stanley Chell 2017 – Results

Firstly on behalf of Aberdare Camera Club can we thank you for your clubs participation at today Stanley Chell, for what I believe was an exceptional competition of the highest standard.

Getting members to present images as prints is becoming an increasing challenge, but we at Aberdare CC believe it to be the best format, the most creative, the most skilled, and when done well a pleasure for all to enjoy.

In the past years we’ve tried to challenge the norm in terms of judges, and so we  wish to thank Walter Benzie for accepting our invitation to judge, and bringing a fresh view and presentation style. His first score of 9.5 brought audible gasps from all attending, until we all recognised that he was scoring to ten. His comments, anecdotes and critiques  were well thought through, and communicated in a means that we all learnt a bit more. To get a former President of The Royal Photographic Association to our part of Wales was a true honour, and in conversation he was heartened by his warm welcome and is now keen to explore more of Wales. Thank you Walter.

We also wish to thank the following sponsors of today’s event and donating so generously.

  • Nomad Cases
  • PaperSpectrum
  • EOS Magazine

We also wish to thank the club members for their efforts in delivering a well presented competition, with yet again the best catering on the circuit. Aberdare always tries to give a true valleys welcome to our friends and guests, especially our secret recipe of “Bara Brith” (it all depends on the brew of the tea 😉 )

So now for the bit that you’ve all been waiting for, the results and scores.

  • Stanley Chell 2017  -Best Club – Inn Focus
  • The Hans Hoyer Trophy – Best Monochrome – Six Pack One Pack – Coltraine Koh – Inn Focus
  • The Glyn John Trophy – Best Colour – The Apple Woman – Gwynfryn Jone – Gwynfra
  • The Glan and Mair Trophy – Best Landscape – Horses at Kenfig – Jayne Libby – Cymro Momo
  • The Doris Chell Trophy – Best Image – The Historian – David Norton – Rhondda

A few Images attached of the winners can be seen below and the scoresheet can be seen here

Thank you all for entering, and  see you all at Stanley Chell 2018.

The day was made possible because of the help given by many dedicated people and I would like to thank them all, in particular. The Judges for their detailed critique, our President Cliff Emery for opening the proceedings and presenting the certificates to the successful candidates, John Cooke our past distinctions Officer for his guidance, Jan Cawley for arranging the buffet, Dave Rees, Howard Evans, Ron Lines, Guy Butler-Madden, and Allan Squires.

The standard was very high this year and those less successful candidates, all of which were so close to gaining the award, are recommended to address the constructive comments made by the judges and apply again next year. We hold a workshop in the spring to advise potential applicants on how to construct a successful panel.

Next year’s Applications for the AWPF, will open at the WPF’s  AGM on the 4th March 2018.

The workshop will be in May 2018 and the assessment day will be next November.

Thank you all

David Lewis AWPF (Distinctions Secretary).

Pixels 2017 Results – Mold once more…

Thanks to Gwynfa Camera Club for this report…. Links are to their website…

Pixels 2017, the 13th running of the competition, took place at Talbot Green Community Centre on Saturday 4th November 2017 and was a tense, exciting and high scoring affair.

It was a particularly good day for Mold Camera Club from the NWPA who, with 76 points from a possible 80, were the winners just a single point ahead of four clubs namely Western Valley, Towy Valley, Barry & Gwynfa. Mold became only the fourth club to win for a second time.

The Mold photos were: Baby Gets a Kick From Dad by Andy Polakowski (19), Dancing Through the Dirt by Matt Morrow (20), The Busker by Rich Hainsworth (19) and Unlucky For Some by Linda Bell (18). Click on the links to see the photographs.

The judge was Brian Swinyard MA(Photo), ARPS, EFIAP/b, DPAGB, BPE3*, PPSA who did a terrific job of expertly judging 156 images. He was concise, humorous and informative. Brian also selected Frozen in Time by John Hufferdine of Towy Valley as Best Monochrome Photograph and Tempest by Eric Williams of Western Valley as Best Colour Photograph.

Gwynfa Camera Club would like to thank everyone who attended the competition and all 39 clubs that entered. Without you, this event would not be possible.
