Graham Meaker FRPS

We’ve received this sad news from David Jones.

Newport Photographic Club is deeply saddened to report the recent passing of lifelong member Graham Meaker.

Graham fully deserved his FRPS. A panel of butterflies and cactii secured this recognition. Images taken on “slide film” before the age of digital technology, when exposure, focus and composition all had to be set in the camera, and there was no delete button! An FRPS is still a great achievement, but to secure one on slide film in macro-photography was remarkable.

Graham was also a respected authority on cactii: he grew them in two greenhouses in his garden and displayed them both to photographic clubs and cactus societies.

In Newport Photographic Club, Graham was highly respected by his peers and provided inspiration to new members over many years. He has been greatly missed since ill health prevented him from attending regular club meetings.

When the club introduced Honorary Life Memberships, Graham was the first to be given this award.

The Meaker family tradition in photography will continue to be kept alive by his son Chris, who is a committee member at our neighbouring club, Western Valley.

Our thoughts are with Chris and the rest of his family at this time.

Graham’s funeral took place at Langstone Crematorium at 11.30 am on Friday 29th March.
